Janet Terry Akers Craighead, 75, of Salem passed away Sunday, July 15, 2007. She was born October 7, 1931 in Roanoke, a daughter of the late John Dewey & Mary Atkinson Akers. She was preceded in death by her brother, John Stewart Akers. Mrs. Craighead was a homemaker, attended Madison College, a member of First United Methodist Church where she started the Mother's Day Out program, a former member of the Eastern Star, Salem Chapter 161. She had a great and close love for children and was Salem's Mother of the Year. She was well known for her cooking and cake making. Her surviving family includes her loving husband of 57 years, Robert Anderson Craighead; three sons & daughters-in-law, Russell Craighead, Steve & Beth Craighead and Timothy & Debbie Craighead; two daughters, Anne Craighead and Nancy Craighead; adoptive daughter, Amanda Allen; cousin, James Atkinson; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 18, 2007 from the chapel of John M. Oakey and Son, Salem with Dr. Michael Houff officiating. Interment will follow at Sherwood Memorial Park. The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial tributes take the form of donations to First United Methodist Church, Salem.
