PNEUMONIA FATAL TO CHARLES CALFEE
Well-Known Mercer County Citizen And Deputy Sheriff Died At Midnight Following Short Illness.
Charles W. Calfee, 54, chief deputy in Beaver Pond district under Sheriff J.C. Fanning and a brother of Mrs. A.E. Bivens, acting postmaster of the Bluefield office, died at 12:30 o'clock midnight at his home on the Bluefield-Princeton Road, following an illness of a few days of pneumonia. Although the critical condition of Mr. Calfee became generally known yesterday, news of his passing will cause profound sorrow throughout Mercer County where he is widely known and highly esteemed. He was stricken last Friday, and his condition gradually failed over the past week-end, and on Monday hope for his recovery was virtually abandoned. Funeral arrangements will be announced later. Mr. Calfee was a native of Mercer County, being a member of a pioneer and distinguished family. He had spent his entire life in Mercer and for many years had engaged in the farming and dairy business. He was a progressive and upright citizen, charitable and held in high esteem by all who knew him. Mr. Calfee was appointed chief deputy of Beaver Pond district with the election of Sheriff Fanning in November, 1932 and had performed his duties with considerable credit. His widow and five children survive: Mrs. Fred Ramsey of Bluefield; Mrs. Maitland Bailey, Princeton Road; Charles W. Calfee Jr.; Anna Calfee and Milton Dudley Calfee, all at home. He also leaves the following brothers and sisters: A.E. Calfee, Princeton; Mrs. A.E. Bivens, Bluefield; Mrs. Myrtle Carr, New Hope; Mrs. Tom Hodges, Bluefield, and C.R. Calfee, Princton Road. Mr. Calfee was a member of the Christian Church, his membership being in Calfee's Chapel. His home is located just through Snider's Gap on Princeton-Bluefield Road.
