He enlisted in the Army in January 1941. Shortly after that he met Carolyn H. Robbins at Fort Lee at a USO function. On May 1st 1943 they were married in Alexandria, VA. He had three sons: Curtis Jr., Charles L (deceased) and Clayton R. While he served in the military he took several college courses for advancement and in 1946 he graduated from Officers Candidate School as a 2nd lieutenant The Winston family traveled extensively. Curtis's military assignments took the family to Virginia, Germany, France, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Philadelphia, and Okinawa. He retired from the Army in 1968. He worked as bank officer at Fidelity Bank for 10 years before officially retiring from the work force.
He enjoyed playing golf and maintained an extensive coin collection. He is member of American Legion Post 102 Hertford County and thoroughly enjoyed interacting with his fellow service members. Preceding him in death are his Parents James T. Winston and Mabel P. Evans, brother, Walter Winston and sister, Edna Allen King Collins, son, Charles L. Winston, and his wife Carolyn H. Robbins. Survived by his two sons, Curtis J. Winston Jr. and Clayton R. Winston, daughters in law Donna and Fay, four granddaughters, Nicole, Winter, Dana and Renee, eight great grandchildren, Sincere, Precious, Akel, Raegan, Mikhail, Dominic, Aden and Braden.
Interment with military rites provided by the U.S. Army Honor Guard will be held 2:15 p.m., Friday, November 22, 2019 at Albert G. Horton Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery, 5310 Milners Rd, Suffolk, VA. A memorial celebration of Curtis' life will be held 11:00 a.m., Saturday, November 23, 2019 at Parklawn-Wood Funeral Home, 2551 N. Armistead Ave., Hampton, VA with a repast to follow.
