Ruby was born on July 8, 1922, in Gregory, West Virginia, to Henry and Rachel (Gibson) Lake. The youngest of 5 siblings, Ruby and her family maintained a working farm through the Great Depression.
Ruby moved to Cleveland, OH, in 1941, where she later met her future husband, John Gormsen. They married on September 12, 1950, and moved to Strongsville, OH, where they raised a son, David Lake Gormsen. Ruby and John owned a small family business together, Gormsen Tiller and Supply Company.
Ruby had a life-long passion for gardening, growing an annual garden in her backyard up to age 96. She enjoyed cooking meals from the fruits and vegetable she grew and always shared extra produce with friends and family. Ruby was an avid genealogist, compiling research on her family tree dating back to the 1700s. Ruby joined the Strongsville United Methodist Church in 1953 and has been an active member ever since, finding companionship and purpose carrying out the church's mission.
Ruby enjoyed volunteering with local organizations, including the Strongsville Historical Society. She was known for her generous spirit, her keen pinochle skills, and her love of family, church and the Cleveland Indians.
Ruby was preceded in death by her parents, her four siblings, and her husband of 54 years, John. She is survived by her son, David (Patricia); three grandchildren, J.P., Lia (John Gianelloni), and JoEllen (Matthew Kahnert); three great-grandchildren, Cora and Tessa Gianelloni and Caleb Kahnert; and several nieces and nephews. The family gives special thanks to Southwest General Hospice, the caring members of the Strongsville United Methodist Church, Ruby's close friends, and the group of Comfort Keepers who cared for Ruby in her final days.
Ruby will be buried on Tuesday at Sunset Memorial Park. A private service for family will be held prior to the burial at Jardine Funeral Home.
A memorial service will be held at the Strongsville United Methodist Church at a later date. Donations can be made to Southwest General Hospice services.
