A son of J.D. and Anna (Cooper) Beckett, he married Ella Hutchinson in Urbana, Illinois on September 5, 1905. The couple had seven children: D.H. Beckett, Akron, Ohio; R.H. Beckett, Route 3, Champaign; Mrs. John Criola, Chicago; Mrs. Walter Miller, Sylvania, Ohio; Roy beckett and Charles Beckett, both of Champaign; and Mrs. Kenneth Ginn, Miamisburg, Ohio. He served as Urbana Police Chief from 1907-1909, then farmed near Philo until September 15, 1921, when he became a Champaign police officer. He retired from that position October 1, 1941. When they lived in Champaign, the Becketts lived at 1615 Glen Park Drive. They bought a house in Mansfield in 1950.
