Chester L. Moran was a U.S. Army Air Corps staff sergeant assigned to the 91st Bomber Group, Heavy, 401st Bomber Squadron during World War II. A bombardier on a 10-person B-17 aircrew, he and all other crew members were declared dead on 26 Feb 1943 after their bomber, "Short Sniffer II" tail # 42-5362, was shot down by German forces. The incident took place over the North Sea near the Frisian Islands. Records reportedly exist stating Staff Sergeant Moran may have survived the aircraft incident and subsequently died over two years later while still held captive in an undisclosed enemy prison camp. No remains were recovered.
A marker was dedicated to Staff Sergeant Moran in the Biloxi National Cemetery at a ceremony held there on 14 November 2019. As of that time the Veterans Administration's grave locator database still reflected Moran's date of death to be 26 Feb 1943, the day his aircraft was destroyed. He is also memorialized on the Tablets of the Missing at Cambridge American Cemetery, Cambridge, England (see FindAGrave 56292652).
Staff Sergeant Moran was one of eleven children raised by Matthew and Esprance Moran in Harrison County, Mississippi. He voluntarily enlisted in January 1941 and received the Purple Heart for combat injuries sustained on the North African front in December 1942. He was also awarded the United States Armed Forces Air Medal.
