Dr. Frank Blackwell Godbold Jr. died Friday, Nov. 27, 2009, at the age of 86.
He was born on March 30, 1923 in South Boston, the son of Frank B. Godbold and Edna Elks Godbold.
Dr. Godbold attended Virginia Military Institute before enlisting in the United States Army in 1942 and serving in Hawaii and Japan during World War II.
Returning to civilian life in 1946, he took pre-med courses at Randolph-Macon College in Ashland and then received his O.D. degree from Northern Illinois College of Optometry in Chicago in 1949.
Dr. Godbold practiced his profession of optometry in South Boston for 39 years and was active in community affairs. He served as a member of the Virginia Optometric Association, board member of the Virginia State Commission for the Visually Handicapped, head of the professional division for United Way fund raising in 1989, president of the Jaycees, Lions Club, and Booster Club, an institutional representative of the Cub Scouts, and a member of the zoning commission.
He also was a lifelong active member of First Presbyterian Church in South Boston, serving as a deacon, elder and Sunday school superintendent.
Dr.Godbold is survived by his wife of 63 years, Nan Lacy Godbold; three children and their spouses, Marian and Jim Harris of Richmond, Susan and Joby Klotz of Richmond, and Frank III and Maria of Tampa, FL; seven grandsons, Lt. Christopher Harris of San Diego, CA, Colin and wife Stephanie Harris of Alexandria, and Kyle and Jay Harris of Richmond, Frank IV, Zachary and Ryan Godbold of Tampa.
He was known for his daily five-mile walk around town, landscaping his lawn and gardens, and fishing when water and weather permitted.
A memorial service will be held Monday, Nov. 30, at 11 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Dr. Russell Lee officiating.
