Hannig, Muriel Kathleen
91, of Sedona passed away on September 17, 2016. Muriel was born on 8/16/25 in Ozawkie, KS, the second of three daughters born to Frances and Paul Stember. She graduated from Kansas University in 1946, completed a Masters degree in zoology at the University of Illinois, and worked briefly in research at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. Muriel met Shelton Marshall Hannig at a church social event. When he asked if he could walk her home, family legend says that she famously asked "the long way or the short way?" The couple married on 1/30/49 in a triple wedding ceremony in Ozawkie with her sisters Donna and Beverly and their husbands. They were happily married for 61 years, until Shel's death in 2010. They had 3 children, Cindy, Vickie, and Mark who pre-deceased his family in 1978. Muriel and Shel lived for over 40 years in Terre Haute, Indiana, where Shel established a construction/architectural firm. Muriel was active in volunteer work at Union Hospital, Swope Art Gallery, and Florence Crittenden and Rose Ladies Aid societies. She was a member of Centenary Methodist Church and PEO chapters in Indiana and later in Arizona where they retired for the beautiful scenery and weather. Muriel loved bird watching, cooking, hiking and traveling. She enjoyed opera, played the organ for pleasure, and sang in the choir. She and Shel were active members of the Sedona United Methodist Church and the Westerners hiking group, and they volunteered at Rock Creek State Park where Muriel led plant identification walks. They were able to travel to more than 40 countries during their marriage, and Muriel enjoyed sharing Shel's beautiful slides of their trips with friends and local groups. Muriel is survived by her daughters, Cindy Hannig Neels and Vickie Hannig, two grandchildren, Alice and Henry Neels, two great grandchildren, and her sister Beverly West A celebration of Muriel's life is planned for late November 2016 in Sedona.
