(1891-1957)

Joseph M. Thomas, 66, of Sugar Grove on Portsmouth Rt. 5, died at 7:35 a.m. Wednesday in Holzer Hospital at Gallipolis.

Mr. Thomas, a retired restaurant operator, had been ill six years and seriously ill for the last three weeks. He had been a patient in the hospital since last Saturday.

In Portsmouth, Mr. Thomas operated a lunchroom near the end of Scioto River bridge and later the coffee shop in the Washington Hotel. After leaving the restaurant business, he located at Gallipolis as a worker on an industrial project.

He was born April 16, 1891, in Ballard County, Ky., a son of Albert Thomas and Mattie Thomas.

Mr. Thomas was a member of a Baptist church in Kentucky and of Elks Lodge.

Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Laura Mehl, of Gallipolis, Mrs. Lillian Henry, of Hammond, Ind., and Mrs. Dorothy Fondow, of Oscar, Ky.; two sons, Pete Thomas, of Cairo, Ill., and Jerry Edward Thomas of Denver, Colo.; a brother, Earl Thomas, of Blytheville, Ky.; and two sisters, Mrs. Pearl Johnson, of Wickliffe, Ky. and Bernell of California.

Mr. Thomas was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Windel-Howland Funeral Home. Interment will be in Friendship Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home after 7 tonight.
