Danny Lee Reveal

Danny Lee Reveal MD, age 77 of Kettering, Ohio, died peacefully of ALS surrounded by his family on Thursday, February 15, 2018. He was the son of Robert Lee Reveal (1917-1969) and Denzil Ruth Manis, (1920-1974), was born in Elwood, Indiana on January 31, 1941. Danny is survived by his loving, steadfast wife of 30 years, Carolyn Ruth Graft Reveal, devoted daughter Ruth Elizabeth (George), faithful son and namesake Danny Lee II, and four supportive and accomplished sons from a previous marriage: Brian David (Anne), Gregory Thomas (Melody), Phillip Michael (Christine), Bradley Stephen (Karenne), and grandchildren, Robert Lee, Myles Beaumont, Vivienne Laine, Grace Catherine, John Phillip, and Sophia Ngweh Fru. Danny has one half-brother Kenneth (Paula) and half-sisters Donna (Jack) and Kelley. He is preceded in death by his brother, Robert Roland (1944-1977) and half-brother Jeff Scott (1957-2006). Danny attended Anderson High School in Indiana, demonstrating outstanding athletic skills - still holding the record in consecutive jump shots in basketball. While shooting baskets alone, he had the epiphany that led him to become a doctor.After graduation he served six years in the United States Navy. He attended Indiana University, graduating in 1965 and finished medical school at Indiana University in 1969. He and his dear friend Dr. Rudi Hofmann were the first two orthopedic residents at Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton, Ohio. He would later receive the Golden Crutch Teaching Excellence Award from the Department of Orthopedic Surgery, Wright State University Boonshoft School of Medicine.A skilled, talented and respected orthopedist and diagnostician, Danny practiced medicine for 35 years in Dayton, Ohio. In 2009 he was recruited by Via Christi Hospital in Pittsburg, Kansas where he started the hospital's first trauma unit. In 2014 he and his family moved to Springfield, Missouri to continue his profession as an office-based orthopedist for Ferrell-Duncan Clinic. Recognizing Danny as the physician who best represented the dedication of an inspired teacher, the Ferrell-Duncan Clinic bestowed him with the Volunteer Teacher of the Year award. After 42 year of healing and caring for patients, staff, friends and family he retired on May 31, 2016. He and his family returned to Dayton, Ohio to engage in a battle with ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease). Danny, a lifelong learner, enjoyed sharing New Yorker cartoons, loved to ski and play golf, and wouldn't miss a Cincinnati Bengals game or a "5-buck bet." He was an avid reader enjoying The New York Times, Kurt Vonnegut works and different works of poetry, he appreciated all genres of music, especially Randy Newman, Paul Robeson and Bob Dylan, and he played the role of movie aficionado ranking the James Bond series, and the acting of Cary Grant and Elizabeth Taylor among the best. He earned his pilot's license at age 68, bought a 4-seat, single engine, high performance Bonanza Debonair airplane and pursued a lifetime dream of flying. Dan's final act of teaching and research will be post-death donation of organs, specifically the brain and spinal cord. Participation in this national study on ALS being conducted by the Department of Veterans Affairs at the VA Biorepository ALS Brain Bank will provide more information on the potential causes, progression, treatment and prevention of ALS and similar neurologic diseases.
