Doris Parker McFarland Smith, 86, of Ridgeland, died Sunday, Jan. 28, 2007, at her home.
Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Wednesday at Wright & Ferguson Funeral Home in Ridgeland, with burial to follow in the Trinity Mausoleum at Parkway Memorial Cemetery. Rev. Percy McFarland Burns will officiate.
She was born on Feb. 27, 1920 in Bay Springs. She graduated early from Jasper High School in 1936 and attended Belhaven College from 1936 to 1938. She married the late Joe Alex McFarland, a prominent attorney, District Attorney, and Circuit Judge of Jasper, Smith, Covington and Simpson Counties. After Judge McFarland's death in 1970, she moved to Jackson to be with her daughter and her son-in-law, the late Dr. James N. McLeod. In 1972, she married Jessie D. (J.D.) Smith. He preceded her in death in 2000. She was an avid duplicate bridge player and achieved the rank of bronze life master. She was a member of Covenant Presbyterian Church in Jackson.
She was also preceded in death by her parents, Ethel Ulysses Parker, Sr. and Lula Mae Noblin Parker; brother, Ethel Ulysses Parker, Jr., and sister, Evelyn Parker Dykes Boleware.
She is survived by a daughter, Jo Anne McFarland McLeod of Ridgeland; son and daughter-in-law, Robert P. "Bob" and Becky McFarland of Cumming, Ga.; six grandchildren, Robert Parker McFarland, Jr., Bryan Alexander McFarland, Preston McFarland, Kara Elizabeth McFarland, Steele McLeod, and Loren McLeod Gineris; three great-grandchildren, James McLeod Gineris, Justin David Gineris and William Jackson Gineris.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to Palmer Home for Children, P. O. Box 746, Columbus, Miss. 39703.
Visitation will be 2 p.m. until service time at Wright & Ferguson Funeral Home, which is in charge of arrangements.
