Pueumonia Claims Mayor's Wife in Local Hospital
Illness Fatal to Mrs. Baals Sunday Night
Prominent Woman, 47, Succumbs after Sickness of One Week.

Mrs. Minnie Baals, 47, of 846 West DeWald Street, the wife of Mayor Harry W. Baals, died of pnuemonia in St. John's Hospital at 10:20 o'clock last night after an illness of one week. She was admitted to the hospital Saturday night in a serious condition and became critical yesterday. Mayor Baals, suffering from a severe cold, accompanied his wife to the hospital, but his condition last night was reported not serious.

Mrs. Baals, a lifelong resident of the city, was born in Fort Wayne, Indiana November 1, 1889, the daughter of Christian and Mary Witte. She attended St. Pauls Lutheran school on Barr Street and International Business College. She was employed in the law offices of Creighton Williams for several years before her marriage.

A member of the Fort Wayne Woman's club, Mrs. Baals had been active in social work here for many years. She attended the Trinity Lutheran church.

Surviving beside the husband are a daughter, Mrs. Eugene Smith of this city (Fort Wayne, IN) and a son, Donald Baals, now a student at Purdue University. Other survivros are three sisters, Mrs. Alfred Thurman, Mrs. A.H. Keller and Mrs. George Soesenheimer, all of Fort Wayne; two brothers, A.H. Witte and Edward Witte, and one grandchild Sharon Smith, all of Fort Wayne. Mrs. Thurman had been visiting in California, was enroute to Fort Wayne relatives were advised.

The body was taken to Klaehn and Sons Funeral Home, where services will be held at a time to be announced later. Rev. Paul Krauss, pastor of Trinity English Lutheran Church will officiate. Friends may view the body at the funeral home after 6:00 pm Tuesday.

Relatives of Mrs. Baals gathered at her bedside yesterday when her condition became alarming, and they were joined by a number of Mayor and Mrs. Baals friends following the latter's death last night.
