William Kenneth Johnson, 80, of Charleston entered into eternal rest on Tuesday, July 10, 2007. He was the son of Claude Myron Johnson, Sr. and Mary Kennedy Johnson and was born in Charleston, SC. He was a 1943 graduate of Bishop England High School. He attended the College of Charleston, served in the US Navy for 2 years and was a 1950 graduate of The Citadel with a BS degree in Civil Engineering. He founded Soil Consultants, Inc. Foundation & Testing Engineers and served as its President from 1951 to 2001. He was a registered Professional Engineer in South Carolina & Georgia. Mr. Johnson was a founding and charter member, past president and lifetime member of the Civil Engineers Club of Charleston. He was a Fellow in the American Society of Civil Engineers, past president of its SC Section and the Eastern Branch of ASCE as well as past president of the SC Society of Engineers. He was also a member of Tau Beta Pi, an engineering Honor Society. He was a Life Member of the Association of Citadel Men, past president of the Charleston Citadel Club and past chairman of the Citadel CEF Foundation. He was very active in the Civil Engineering Department by giving his time and talents in training civil engineering students with hands on experience at his business and he served on the Advisory Board of the Civil Engineering Department. He was a very active member in the Knights of Columbus Rev. PN Lynch Council # 704 serving as its Past Grand Knight, State Deputy of South Carolina, and he served a three-year term on the National Board of the Knights of Columbus as Supreme Warden. He was the first member from South Carolina to serve as an officer on the National Board. He also served for eight years as Vice Supreme Master in the Fourth Degree for the provinces of South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia, Florida and Puerto Rico. A former Eagle Scout, he was the recipient of the Silver Beaver Award and the St. George Award. Having earned both the Eagle Scout Award and the Distinguished Eagle Scout Award and desiring to strengthen the Associations mission as a manpower source for the Boy Scouts of America, he was recognized as a Regent for Life of the National Eagle Scout Association. He served on the Board of the Carolina Coastal Council BSA and the Coastal Carolina Boys Council. He was recognized for over 60 years of service with the Boy Scouts of America. The Dining Hall at Camp Ho Non Wah was named in his honor by the Carolina Coastal Council. He served as president of the Charleston Chamber of Commerce during the Tri-centennial year of the City Of Charleston. He was a past president of the Rotary Club of Charleston where he received the Paul Harris Award for service above self and served on the Advisory Committee of BB&T Bank. He was a past president of the American Council of Independent Laboratories and served on the Board for fourteen years. He was honored in 1982 with the Roger Truesdail award for outstanding contributions to the ACIL. In 1989 he received the distinguished service Lewis E. Harris Fellow Award. He was a Founding Director and past president of the Independent Laboratory Assurance Company in Bermuda. He also served on the Board of Hibernian Mutual Insurance Company in Charleston. He has served as chairman of numerous non-profit organizations including the United Way Fund, Easter Seals, College of Charleston Foundation Fund and the Diocesan Development Fund. He was a member of Blessed Sacrament Church and served as a Lay Reader as well as a member of the Building & Finance Committees. He was one of twelve men chosen by Right Rev. John J. McCarthy to form the Legion of Mary. The Legion visited and helped those in need, desolate and sick members of the parish and helped them rekindle God's love and the love of His Church. He is survived by Martha Cotten Johnson, his wife of 56 years. Other survivors include two sons: William Kenneth Johnson, Jr. and M. Brian Johnson of Charleston, SC; three daughters: Mollie Johnson Halle of Marietta, GA, Sallie Johnson Simmons of Laurens, SC and Marie Johnson Starich of Houston, TX and twelve grandchildren: Ashley, Lindsay & Sydney Simmons, Caitlyn, Victoria & Tyler Halle, Olivia & Bartholomew Starich, Casey & Taylor Johnson, Kent Johnson and Ramon Jarrell. His surviving brother and sisters include: A. Bryant Johnson of James Island, SC, Ann Marie Wingate of North Augusta, SC, Natalie Knisley, Nancy Miller and Patty Jones of Mt. Pleasant, SC. The family will receive friends this Thursday at the JAMES A. McALISTER FUNERAL HOME, 1620 SAVANNAH HWY from 5:00 P.M. to 8:00 PM. The Rosary will be recited at 7:30 P.M. The relatives and friends of Mr. and Mrs. William Kenneth Johnson are invited to attend his Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 AM, Friday, July 13, 2007 at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. The Rite of Committal will be in Holy Cross Cemetery.
