HITCHCOCK — Dr. Leticia Cruz-Abad passed from this life Monday, August 10, 2015, in Hitchcock. She was 83 years old.

Dr. Abad was a Pediatrician in private practice and affiliated with Manila Children’s Hospital in the Philippines. She was held in high regard during her practice. She came to Houston, Texas in 1964 and attended the University of Houston. She worked in the Hematology-Oncology Department at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, Texas until her retirement in 1991. A strong willed woman, she never let her health issues stop her from pursuing her passions and interests.

She was an early member of the Filipino Association and served as President. It was important to her that her children to remember the Filipino culture and traditions. She volunteered at the American Cancer Society and organized the laryngectomy support group called “The Lost Chord Club”. She was involved with the Hitchcock Lioness Club, was a member of the Master Gardner Association and was interested in all plants, but loved African violets and cultivated hybrids. She was very kind and generous and always extended her hand to help all people, but was happiest surrounded by all her family, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Simeon and Elena (Reyes) Cruz; husband, Tirso Abad, Sr.; brothers, Felix and Bernabe and sisters, Marcosa and Ester.

Survivors include her sons, Tirso Abad, Jr. and wife, Doris of Texas City, Ryan Carpenter and wife, Breianne of Galveston; daughters, Josephine Faulkner and husband, Jeff of Hitchcock, Maria L. Abad and life partner, Pamela Yip, Manette Benitez and husband, Gino of the Philippines; brothers, Benjamin Cruz and wife, Linda, Tony Cruz and wife, Maria Evelina; 9 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.

The family expresses their gratitude and a special acknowledgement to her doctors for their dedication, care, and expertise: Dr. Anika Bell-Gray, Dr. Owen B. Holland, Dr. Todd Masel, Dr. Gurinder K. Luthra and all the other specialty doctors that have at one time cared for her.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society of Galveston County.

A private cremation was conducted under the direction of Hayes Funeral Home, 10412 Highway Six, (409) 925-3501. www.HayesFuneralHome.com
