Barbara Surpless, 81, of Oxford, died October 23, 2019 at her home in Oxford.

Funeral Services held, Monday, October 28, 2019 at the First Baptist Church in Oxford. Burial will be at the Oxford Cemetery. A memorial has been established with the Oxford Friendship Center. Oxford Funeral Home, Oxford, KS, entrusted with arrangements.

Barbara Dee Surpless was born June 14, 1938, the daughter of Donald and Adelaide (Bothwell) Knapp in Van Nuys, CA. Barbara was the oldest of three daughters. She attended Oxford Public Schools and graduated in 1956. Following graduation, she married Paris Wakeman; to that union, three daughters were born. They later divorced. Barbara moved to New Jersey to work for Braen Stone Industries. While there, she married Roger Surpless who preceded her in death in 2007.

She then returned to Kansas and her home town of Oxford. Barbara was an amazing cook and loved feeding her family and friends. She was bright, witty and made everyone around her feel loved. She had a contagious smile and smiled most when talking about her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her competitive spirit showed often as she loved to play any board or card game and could get wound up at the weekly bridge club. She loved to travel but hated to fly so she was always on board for a road trip.

Barbara is survived by her daughters: Kaye Dee Potucek (Jim) of Oxford, Shelley Patterson of Derby, KS and Wendy Maness (Eric) of Ben Lomond, CA; 10 grandchildren: Clint Potucek (Elisabeth), Mitch Potucek (Heidi), Emily McBee (Gage), Brian Hamilton, Lynn Dee Stoll (Ryan), Seth Patterson (Anna) Rachel Patterson, McKenna Maness, Lily Maness, Mystery Maness; and 13 great grandchildren; two sisters: Marilyn Cormack of Lawrence, KS and Janet Braen of Franklin Lakes, NJ; as well as many special nieces, nephews and close friends.

She is preceded in death by her parents, and her husband, Roger Surpless in 2007.
