Charity Scofield was born in Bedford, Westchester, New York, daughter of Henry Scofield. An examination of census reports 1790-1830 suggest 1765 is a good estimate of her birth year. It has been suggested that Charity was an only child.

After Charity Scofield married in Bedford, New York Joshua Griffith about 1785, they settled in Pawling, Dutchess County, New York and Henry Scofield appears near them in census reports after that.

A detailed description of her husband's death appears in both a romanticized version in a letter written in 1877 by a Charles Griffen, grandson and a more realistic version in "Settlers of Beekman Patent" by Frank J. Doherty. In the latter, Charity (unlike her name!) asks her dying husband if he had been drinking. After her husband's death in 1819, Charity appears between Henry Baker and Elijah Eastwood in the 1820 census with other family members in her household. In the 1830 census, she is living alone but next to two sons, Ebenezer and Epenetus Griffith. That is the last census in which she appears. It is likely all three died a couple of years later.

Some sources suggest Charity (Scofield) Griffith died of Typhus fever, possibly in 1832 when her two sons living next to her also died the same year. It should be remembered that July 1832 is when New York City becomes the epicenter for the cholera epidemic which rages throughout the U.S. in the following months. Mother and sons could have perished from that epidemic.

It seems likely that Charity is buried next to her husband in an unmarked grave. With an estimate of over 200 burials in this cemetery, only a very few are marked with existing stones.

Through their daughter, Susannah (Griffith) Ludington, Joshua and Charity (Scofield) Griffeth are grandparents of Harrison Ludington (1812-1891) who was mayor of Milwaukee and Governor of Wisconsin 1876-1878).

Children of Joshua Griffith and Charity Scofield all born at Pawling, Dutchess Co., NY, were as follows:
1. NOAH GRIFFITH, born 1786; married Esther Randall WIGHTMAN.
2. HENRY GRIFFITH; born 1788.
3. MARGARET “PEGGY” GRIFFITH, b. 1790; married Charles JUDSON.
4. LAZARUS GRIFFITH, b. 1792; married Matilda WILCOX.
5. SUSANNAH GRIFFITH, b. 30 September 1794; married Frederick LUDINGTON.
6. EBENEZER K. GRIFFITH, b. 11 May 1797; married Eliza Ann GRIFFIN.
7. JOSHUA GRIFFITH, b. 1803; married Tamson BIRDSALL.
