Mary Ann McCudden, was born in Chicago in 1929, the daughter of Roy and Agnes Magruder, and the sister of John Magruder. After graduating from St. Scholastica Academy in Chicago and St. Louis University, she worked as a medical technician at Evanston Hospital. In 1959 she married John McCudden, with whom she had six children, Mary Rose, Paul (wife, Tina and children, Jackson and Kieran), Thomas, James (wife, Connie and children, Matthew and Stephen), Daniel and Anne. The couple lived in the North Avalon neighborhood on Chicago's South Side, where they worked with others to promote racial integration in their parish and community. In 1967 they moved to Evanston, where Mary Ann was active in her parish, St. Nicholas, and the Evanston community. She established a soup kitchen for the homeless at St. Nicholas, was a member of the parish's Peace and Justice Committee, the Evanston Commission on Aging, the Evanston Ecumenical Action Council and other organizations. In all that she did she was a strong, compassionate voice for the poor, the homeless, and the defenseless. She will be remembered with love and affection by her husband, her children and grandchildren, and her friends. Visitation Friday 7:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. at St. Nicholas Church, Ridge Ave. and Washington St., Evanston. Funeral Mass Saturday 1 p.m. Interment Calvary Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the ENH Hospice, 5215 Old Orchard Rd., Skokie, IL 60077 or to the Evanston Ecumenical Action Council, Box 1414, Evanston, IL 60204.
