JOHN REEVES, JR. (b.9/10/1824; Green Co., KY - d.12/21/1914; Taylor Co., KY). Son of John Reeves, Sr. & Catherine "Caty" Perry (Caty b. 1785; NC or SC - d. 1855;KY). Census records of KY note birth in both states. Caty was the daughter of Elizabeth Haynes/Hayes & Richard Perry (md. bond dated May 8, 1767 in Rowan Co., NC. There children were: Obadiah, Ebenezer, Richard Ankrum, Elizabeth, Caty, Jane and 1 other female child per Surry Co., NC 1790 Census. The sons all moved from Green/Barren Co, KY to Johnson / Morgan Co., Indiana by 1823.).

Mrs. Elizabeth Haynes-Perry and her son Obadiah Perry were signers on the marriage bond of John Reeves & Caty Perrt, 8/29/1805 in Green Co, KY as Richard must have been deceased or away from home hunting/trapping. Elizabeth signed as Mother on the right side of document and Obadiah signed on the left side of the document were Witness normally signed.
James's Grandfather, Richard Perry can be traced back to Bedford Co., VA when he sells 150 acres on the North side of Otter River including both sides of Lick Run on Sept. 1, 1764 for 20 pounds..."Richard Perry of Ronan (Rowan) County, NC to John Ward" (neighbor), DBK 2, Pg. 481-483. It appears Richard's father was Obadiah Perry who had obtained the very same 150 acres by Patent on July 25, 1749 for 15 Shillings (next to neighbor John Phelps and by 1754 neighbor John Anthony). Witnesses to sale in 1764: Thomas Pullen, Wm Walker & Robert Smith.
Richard Perry's property in Surry Co., NC is noted on Deed June 13, 1778 (Entry # 175) of "Augustine Blackburn 600 acres on North Fork of Blews Creek the place where on Moses Linvill lives beg on the Meadow Branch, running crossing the creek to the Little Fork of Blews Creek Richard Perry old Ax entry crossing the Creek to the ridge of Lick Creek running to the middle branch of Lick Creek..."

In addition, Richard & Elizabeth his wife entered a Land Grant in Mecklenburg Co., NC (now Concord, Cabarrus Co) May 20, 1772. Land Grant #678 issued March 4, 1775, 200 acres on headwaters of Little Cold Water Creek. Neighbors Rich'd Cains & Martin Pheiffers. DBK 25, pg 138 & DBK 27, pg 119.

Before settling in Green Co., KY in 1803, one mile from Cader Edwards. Richard lived in the Mountains on Laurel River. It appears Richard may have been living in Lancaster District, South Carolina with several of his Surry Co. neighbors and it appears his daughter Caty was born in SC per Census by her son James Reeves in 1860.
Richard was also a Rev. War Soldier who fought with Surry Co, NC neighbor Laurence Angel per Angel's Pension Application #S31519 in Johnson Co., IN in November 1832. There was a Richard Perry on the roaster list of Oct. 1780 Battle of Kings Mountain in SC. Angel states he was near the battle.
Richard was also an Indian Fighter (killed the Renegade Creek Indian "Old Cinquo" at the Big Blue Spring in KY in early April 1788. This Indian was one of the meanest savages on the TN River). Richard was a Trapper and Guided a party of Virginians with George Middleton to Lexington, KY in March 1788 who had Warrants for about 100,000 acres in which they wished to locate, North of the Cumberland River if possible, and South of the Kentucky (then VA) line; as the Warrants were issued by the State of North Carolina, and, as Henry Skeggs the famous Long Hunter and friend of Daniel Boone had worked with some of the party previously, they wished to employ him as Guide. The party would wait in Lexington, outfitting, until the return of Middleton and Perry and then try to join Skeggs in the 'barrens' if Skeggs could take charge of them. Source: Cyrus Edwards' Stories of Early Days, pg 12-23. Edwards describes Richard Perry..."who was now old in 1803, was a rough, unlettered trapper, but not a bad man by any means. He cared for little more in the world than enough to eat for one day ahead, a hunting shirt, a pair of buckskin pants & moccasins, a coonskin cap, a rifle and a good store of ammunition, and a few traps, and occasional shot at an Indian; but his wife was a woman of some natural refinement and taste; and hoped and struggle in vain for something better in life...."
Richard is noted in several records of KY from 1777 - 1803. Just a few noted below:
1.) Campaign of 1777 roster of Capt. Bledsoe along with Isaac Shelby, John Robertson and several others.
2.) Roster of 1773 of Gen. Clark at the Falls of the Ohio River along with Wm Manifee, Geo Teater, Peter Vardiman (Vardiman from Bedford Co., VA and helped Daniel Boone cut the Cumberland Gap. Teater supplied beef, 674 diets to Gen. Geo Rogers Clark in Expedition of Shawnee Indians 12/20/1782. Also the Illinois Regiment on 11/6/1781 - 428 rations.)
3.) May 13, 1782 -Signers of Cumberland Compact at Ft Nashbrough, Davidson Co., TN several men who where neighbors in VA & NC and who appeared with Perry on Militia Rosters, etc.; Richard Henderson, Jacob Castleman, Wm McWhorter, John Crow/Crew, Adam Kelar, John Moore, John Pheleps, Wm Pope, etc.
4.) 1/15/1782 Logan Co Court Records about 50 people flee Ft. Nashbrough (Davidson Co.) TN for KY due to numerous Indian Raids; Richard Perry, Jacob Castleman, Wm McWhirter, Philip Panther, Jonas Menefee, Ed Hall, John Robertson, Littlepage Proctor (he and his brothers with Daniel Boone at Fort Boonesboro).
5.) 5/16/1787 Lincoln Co., KY Court Case, Walter Beall vs. Richard Perry.
6.) Richard also appears in some Surry and Guilford Co., NC records; auctions, road orders, tax lists.
