First Sergeant, Howard B. Ayres, of Fort Ontario, N. Y., son of Walter B. Ayres of Binhamton, N. Y., died at the Fitzsimons General Hospital, Denver Colo., Friday, July 26th. He was born in Hightstown, New Jersey, Sept. 29, 1901 and was married June 12, 1928 to Miss Naomi W. Marshall, formerly of Oswego, N. Y. He answered the first call for volunteers for the World War and after service across came back and enlisted and served 3 years on the Mexican Border. Then re-enlisted and served eight years at Fort Ontario until his illness last December when he was sent to Denver, Colo. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Naomi Ayres, his father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. Walter B. Ayres, a sister, Mrs. Thomas Flowers, a stepsister, Mr. Fred Cook, all of Binghamton, N. Y. and grandfather Chas. H. Ayres of Hightstown. Funeral services were held at the William L. Field Funeral Home, Hightstown, Tuesday afternoon. Services at the grave were conducted by Hightstown Post No. 148, American Legion. The interment was at Cedar Hill cemetery. [The Hightstown Gazette (New Jersey), Thurs., 1 Aug 1929]
