MARY CULLER, COMMUNITY VOLUNTEER FOR MANY YEARS

Mary S. Culler's community service was recognized when she was 72 years old with the United Appeal presentation of its distinguished service award.
Mrs. Culler, 88, died Saturday at Suburban Community Hospital. She had suffered a heart ailment for the past few months.
Mrs. Culler, Shaker Heights, was the widow of the Rev. Arthur J. Culler who died in 1946.
He was dean of Hiram College and Professor of religion from 1920 to 1930. In 1930, he founded the Heights Christian Church and was pastor there until 1944.
Mrs. Culler was past president of the United Church Women and of the Council of Church Women. She served two terms as president of the Phillis Wheatley Association, a family service neighborhood agency at 4450 Cedar Ave. She was a YWCA board member for more than 20 years and a longtime volunteer at Doctors Hospital.
She was neighborhood chairman of United Appeal volunteers in Shaker Heights for 10 years.
" Mrs. Culler's contributions have created a lasting impression in the community," the United Appeal citation read when it was presented on October 17, 1961.
She was educated at Juniata Academy, now Juniata College, in Huntington, Pennsylvania.
Mrs. Culler was the first woman to be named an honorary elder of the Heights Christian Church.
Survivors include sons, Arthur Dwight, English professor at Yale University, and George D. Culler, former director of the Akron Art Institute and the San Francisco Art Museum; four grandchildren and five great - grandchildren.
