George Emery Almy, 76, peacefully departed from his home in Lakeview and launched his boat for eternal fishing on September 2, 2016.
George was born January 3, 1940, in Alma, Mich., to Francis and Maxine Almy. He attended Lakeview High School and graduated from Alma High School in 1958.
George lived his entire life in Lakeview, a hometown area of the Almy family since 1860. He was formerly active in the Lakeview Lions Club, Tamarack Sportsman’s Club, local Boy Scouts, and Lakeview Little League. George served his beloved community as a volunteer firefighter for 16 years, part-time Cato Township constable for 10 years, and Village of Lakeview Public Works employee/supervisor for 15 years. He retired from Reith-Riley in 2000 after 23 years and enjoyed his retirement years fishing bluegill in local lakes, watching Detroit Tiger baseball and college basketball, antiquing, refurbishing peddle tractors for his grandchildren, woodworking, meticulously grooming his lawn, and fishing trips to Canada, Alaska, Florida, and Wisconsin.
George will live on through his children, Lynne Bowen, Sue (Tom) Goin, and David (Paula) Almy; 10 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law Janet and Beverly, brother-in-law David; 3 nieces and 4 nephews; and will forever be appreciated by his special friend and fishing buddy of 8 years, Barbara Morris, and special friends Mike, Carley, Eve and Fred Roberts, all of Lakeview.
He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Francis (1968) and Maxine (1995), brothers, John (1983) and Kent (1988), sister, Linda Bonnell (2012), son-in-law, Jeff Bowen (2011), and great-grandson, Greyson Bowen (2012).

A Memorial Service will be held September 24, 2016, from 12:30-1 p.m. at Tamarack Place, 306 S. Lincoln Ave. in Lakeview, followed by a fish fry-buffet luncheon from 1-4 p.m. A private interment of ashes will be held at a later date at Cato Cemetery.
George was a quiet supporter of his community through donations to many causes that arose out of necessity or hardship, such as providing holiday meals to families, sports equipment to players and teams at local schools, backpacks to students at the start of a school year, among many others. To honor George’s spontaneous gifts from the heart to support those in his community, the family requests donation considerations be made in lieu of flowers to the George Almy Community Support Memorial Fund. Please make gifts to: George Almy Memorial Fund, c/o Community First Federal Credit Union, 9637 N. Greenville Road, Lakeview, MI 48850.
