Civil War: Company E, 9th Missouri Cavalry; Company A and B, 10th Missouri Cavalry

Wilhelm Joseph DeGress left Prussia (Germany) for the United States, arriving in New York City in September 1856. During the Civil War William was commissioned a 1st Lieutenant at St. Louis, Missouri, and mustered into Company E, 9th Missouri Cavalry. He was transferred to Company A, 10th Missouri Cavalry, in October 1862. Lieutenant DeGress was promoted to Captain August 29, 1864, and transferred to command Company B, 10th Missouri Cavalry. Captain DeGress was mustered out in July 1865. After the war he returned to St. Louis where in 1865 or 1866 he married Virginia Isabelle F. Gordon. William moved with his family to Valparaiso, Chile, in 1872 to look after the affairs of his brother Francis DeGress' arms import business. He returned to the United States early in April 1876, but before returning to St. Louis, Missouri, he took time to become a U.S. citizen at New York City on April 12, 1876. William, Isabelle, and their first three children appear as residents at St. Louis in 1880, where William was working as a notary public (1880 US Census). William moved with his family to Mexico City in 1882 where he was again employed by his brother's arms import company, Wexel & DeGress, at 16 Avenida Morelos, Mexico City. After the death of his brother in 1883, William became a full partner in the firm. When Wexel died, William found a new partner, J. J. Mohler (Mohler & DeGress), and expanded business to include heavy machinery, farm implements, bicycles, and, in 1896, Mexico's first automobiles. William and Isabelle remained at Mexico City for the rest of their lives. William filed for a Civil War veteran's disability pension at Mexico City February 7, 1887, and received application No. 596,701 and certificate No. 776,304. William was a member of Mexico City's E.O.C. Ord Post, No. 100, Grand Army of the Republic, and the Masonic Lodge. After his death from stomach trouble, Isabelle filed for a Civil War widow's pension at Mexico City February 9, 1906, and received application No. 842,922 and certificate No. 610,987. Both of his brothers were Union veterans.
