A son of Jeremiah and Bethiah Boynton Felt he was born in Nelson, Cheshire, New Hampshire and married first Sarah Emily Estes in 1878 in Hennepin County, Minnesota. They had two daughters, Grace Emily and Sarah Eva before his wife died in Dec 1880 shortly after the birth of Sarah. Sadly Sarah Eva died the following July and she and her mother are buried at Mound Cemetery, Hennepin County, Minnesota. Daniel remarried in Seattle in 1889 to Eunice Elizabeth Estes and they had Julia Irene Felt.
