Veteran,

Herbert McKennley "Herb" Stone, 90 years 11 months and 20 days of age, of Somerset, Kentucky, departed this life and joined his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ in Heaven on Friday, October 4th, 2019 at 2:20 a.m. at the Hospice of Lake Cumberland Jean Waddle Care Center following a long battle with dementia and heart desease.

Herb was born in Pulaski County, Kentucky on Monday, October 15th, 1928, son of the late Joseph Cyrus "Lasses" Stone and Mary Nancy Ziglar Stone. He was a veteran of the United States Army having served in the Korean War, where he was a Prisoner of War for a short time. Herb was a member of the Parkers Mill Road Baptist Church. He was a retired plumber, electrical, and heating and air conditioning contractor and a 50 + years member of the Masonic Lodge F & AM with a 32nd degree in both Scottish Rite and the York Rite. He was also a member of the Shriners, Gand Commandery Nights Templar, Eastern Stars and the Independent Order of Odd Fellows. Herb worked closely over the years to help others through the Shriners Eye Foundation, Shriners Burn Institute, and Shriners Children's Hospital. In younger years he would visit the Masonic Home for Widows and Orphans in Louisville, Kentucky. He was a wealth of knowledge on local history and family genealogy and always had stories to tell of his younger days. He enjoyed work on antique clocks especially mantel clocks. Herb is forever loved and missed by his family, lodge brothers and a vast number of friends.

Although he had memorized many Masonic lectures word by word over the years his favorite poem set to memory was "Trees" by Joyce Kilmer. "I think that I shall never see a poem lovely as a tree. A tree whose hungry mouth is prest against the earth's sweet flowing breast. A tree that looks at God all day and lifts her leafy arms to pray. A tree that may in Summer wear a nest of robins in her hair. Upon whose bosom snow has lain, Who intimately lives with rain. Poems are made by fools like me, But only God can make a tree."

Herb was survived by his wife of 14 years, Jean Hainey Large-Stone, whom he married in Tennessee on Friday, August 5th, 2005; one son, Joseph "Joe" (and wife, Vickie) Stone; one step-son, Gary (and wife, Lynn) Large; one step-daughter, Elizabeth (and husband, Tom) Ullmer; eight grandchildren, Adam (and wife, Alicia) Stone, Ashley Stone, Brian Stout (and fiancee, Rene Garner), Jennifer (and husband, Tim) Girdler, Steven Stout (and companion, Laura Strunk), Cary (and husband, Will) Daniel, Kyle Ullmer, and Monica Ullmer; two great-granddaughters, Madisyn Coffman and Amelia Daniel; two great-grandsons, Ethan and Andrew Girdler; two brothers, Kenneth (and wife, Janet) Stone and Richard (and wife, Kathy) Cundiff; and a host of other family and friends who mourn his passing.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Cyrus "Lasses" Stone, who departed this life on February 3rd, 1965 and Mary Nancy Stone, who departed this life on December 11th, 1946; his first wife of 54 years, Anna Mae Rogers Stone, whom he married on October 3rd, 1946 and who departed this life on August 18th, 2001; one sister, Evelyn Foster, who departed this life on January 21st, 1988; two brothers, Jessie Stone, who departed this life on March 29th, 1994 and James Stone, who departed this life on January 14th, 2007; and a special nephew he thought the world of, Jessie Ray Stone, who departed this life on March 9th, 2019.

Visitations were held at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 10th, 2019 at the Pulaski Funeral Home followed by a Independent Order of Odd Fellows service beginning at 5:30 p.m. A Masonic service preformed by Somerset Masonic Lodge #111 F & AM was held at 6:00 p.m. that evening.

THIS IS A TRIBUTE IN MEMORY OF HERB,

~~~~ Crossing the Bar ~~~~
Sunset and evening star,
And one clear call for me!
And may there be no moaning of the bar,
When I put out to sea,
But such a tide as moving seems asleep,
Too full for sound and foam,
When that which drew from out the boundless deep
Turns again home.
Twilight and evening bell,
And after that the dark!
And may there be no sadness of farewell,
When I embark;
For tho' from out our bourne of Time and Place
The flood may bear me far,
I hope to see my Pilot face to face
When I have crost the bar.
