John Elberson Carter was born to William Carter (son of James Carter and Sarah Freel) and Margaret Chasey in Clark County, Ohio in 1854. He was #6 out of 7 children, but most of his family died young. Alice died as a baby before John was born.
John's sisters Rachel died at age 18 followed by his sister Mary Elizabeth at age 23 a few years later, neither married. Mother Margaret died next at the age of 53. John's sister Sarah who had married James Bodkin died at age 24 in 1877 leaving 2 small children and her husband behind.
John and Jenny got married in October of that year (1877), and Father William died in December that same year, at the age of 61.
James Carter and Luella Carter Littlejohn and her family moved to MN, probably to be near family. James married in 1884, but a few years later James also died leaving a wife and two children behind. This only left John and Luella Carter Littlejohn, who both lived to their older years.

John Carter married Jenny VanderHyde on 27 Oct 1877 in Concord, Dodge, Minnesota. John and Jenny had 8 children: William Carter, Nellie Carter (died as a baby), Minnie Carter Baggett, Mortie Carter, Elizabeth Carter Graham, Maggie Carter, Hattie Carter Gilsrud, Mary Carter Zerwas.

After John died in 1927 after having pneumonia for 6 days. Jenny the went and lived with their oldest son Willie and her grandson Harry.

Johns newspaper funeral notice read:
The funeral of one of the pioneer residents of this county, John Carter, was held from the local M.E. church on Wednesday afternoon of last week, the services being conducted by Rev. Ralph Hendricks, pastor of the Le Sueur Center M.E. church. Mr Carter was 73 years of age, and for several years past the family have made their home in the vicinity of Lake Volney, but had been residents of this community for many years. The family have the sympathy of their Cleveland friends.
