Born in Brooklyn, NY to immigrants John Frank Fryer (England) and Catherine Donnelly (Ireland), my father traveled on the thoroughbred horseracing circuit as a cook and settled in Lexington, Kentucky after meeting and marrying my mother, Anna Mae Hughes. They were married April 18, 1939 in Lexington, Kentucky by the Reverend Clarence Walker.

He served in the Navy during World War II, also as a cook. Subsequently he was employed by the Narcotic Farm on Newtown Pike in Lexington and finally by the Lexington Municipal Housing Project (now razed). He also worked as a vender for Turf Catering Company for whom he sold peanuts at University of Kentucky Basketball Games at Memorial Coliseum and for other local sporting venues.

He fathered two children; myself and my brother, William Dee (Billy) Fryer and had three grandchildren who were born after his death; DeONa Marie Stratton, Joseph Donald (Jodee) Stratton and Melissa Ann Fryer.

My father died unexpectedly at the early age of 59 on my 24th birthday.
