Theta Porter, 91 years, 7 months, 9 days old passed on to Heaven on October 1, 2019 at her home in Squires with her loving son, Bill and family by her side.

Theta June Long was born February 23, 1928 in Kansas City, MO to Lawrence and Della (Nipps) Long. Theta's mother passed away shortly after she was born and she was reared by her maternal grandmother, Phoebe (Foster) Nipps-Garrison until her dad married Gladys (Houchins) Ray in 1938. Gladys became Theta's best friend and she introduced Gladys to everyone as "Mom".

Theta was a 1947 Ava High School graduate. After receiving additional education she was proud to teach GED classes with Amanda Porter for many years.

Theta was owner and operator of the Porter's Cafe in the Squires community for nearly 60 years. She was a pillar and servant in the community to the people she loved. Theta served the Squires community for 25 years as the Secretary to the Squires Volunteer Fire Department and was the founder and organizer of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Squires Fire Department. She was also a board member of the Murray Cemetery and many years served as Secretary on the Girdner Cemetery Board of Trustees. Theta served on the Douglas County Professional Womens Association and served many years supporting DOW camp and the local 4H organization, and she was a member of the Rebekah Lodge.

Theta was a Christian and a member of Ava General Baptist Church for 40 years. In the last few months to make traveling easier, she attended nearby at the Girdner Union Church.

On June 13, 1946, Theta and Elmer L. Porter were married and two children were born to this union. Theta loved to cook, one day she prepared a meal for Elmer and other men that were at his Garage. The men raved over her talent of cooking and when she served them a piece of pie they all told her she should open a Cafe right there in the Garage. It wasn't long until Elmer partitioned off part of his Garage and Theta put her talents to work. In 1968 she moved her Cafe closer to Squires on "new" Highway 5. Theta would tend to spoil everyone that walked into her Café. You might have walked in as a stranger but left as a friend.

Theta was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, William Guy and Leslie Long and a sister, Lucille Rose Long.

She is survived by her children, Bill Porter of the home and Joyce Strollo of Florida, two grandsons, Mark and Bruce Strollo, many nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of relatives and numerous friends, along with many in the community that looked to her as a second mother.

Graveside services for Theta will be Friday, Oct. 4, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. in the Murray Cemetery, Squires, MO. Officiating will be Rev. Oren Alcorn and Pastor Maxine Lund. Memorials may be made to Gideon's or Murray Cemetery. Services are being conducted by Clinkingbeard Funeral Home, Ava, MO.
