Son of John Ellington Hightower and Mary Grace Townsend, John was born in Stevensville, MT, but was raised in Missoula.

As 2nd Lieut, John served as the Navigator on a B-24H-15-FO Liberator named "Ford's Folly" (#42-52515), 754th Bomber Squadron, 458th Bomber Group (H), 8th Air Force, US Army Air Force based in England during World War II.

He was married on 16 January 1940 in San Francisco, San Francisco County, California to Marjorie Lou Steele and enlisted in the Army Air Corps on Sep 16, 1942 at Fort Douglas, Utah. He was noted at being a carpenter.

John was "Killed in Action" when his B-24 was hit with flak and exploded over Lake Glindow, Werder (Havel), Germany on Mar 6, 1944. Out of the crew of 10, 2 were captured and held as POW's, 6 were KIA, and 2 were MIA.
