It appears that prior to about 1970, Brothers' tombstones were inscribed without their surnames.

John Joseph Cullinane was born on June 20, 1853, in New Orleans, Louisiana, and entered the novitiate on February 10, 1866 at Pass Christian, Mississippi. He died at age 89 on January 11, 1942 in Glencoe, Missouri, and is buried there in the Brothers' Cemetery.

Brother Charles received his early education with the Christian Brothers at St. Vincent's School in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana. As the Civil War was ending, he entered the novitiate of the Brothers and in March of 1867 he received his first teaching assignment, at his alma mater, St. Vincent's School. His 76 year career as a Brother led him to teach at St. Patrick's High School in Chicago, only a year after the great fire in that city; Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin; Cretin High School in St. Paul, Minnesota; Christian Brothers High School in St. Louis, Missouri; the Orphanage at Feehanville, Illinois; Bernalillo and St. Michael's College in Santa Fe, New Mexico; and finally to La Salle Institute in Glencoe, Missouri, where he died and is buried.

He was in the first community assigned to CBC St. Louis after the fire of 1916, and at the time of his death at age 89, he was the Dean (the oldest or most senior Brother by age) of the Brothers of the entire United States. He was in his 76th year as a De La Salle Christian Brother.
