He is survived by his loving wife of 38 years, Gayle Winningham; beloved children, Ronald Winningham and wife Pam, Randall Winningham and wife Darlene, Natalie Winningham, Bonnie Ashburn and husband Terry, and Bill Bruce and wife Kim; grandchildren, Lee Winningham (Jessica), Mandy Kelley (Tom), Kara Johnson (Jeremy), Jonathan Winningham (Kim) and Emma Kate Bruce; 10 cherished great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents; beloved first wife, Beatrice Winningham; brothers, Dalpheus, Sherlie, Norman, Willard, Kenneth; and sister, Lyndell.
Artis grew up on a farm in Overton County and attended high school in Livingston. He entered the United States Army in 1943 and served in Europe during World War II. He came home in 1945 and entered college at Tennessee Polytechnic Institute (Tennessee Tech University) where he earned his B.S. degree in Agriculture. Later, he entered Peabody College and earned a second degree in Education.
He went on to teach school for over 25 years in many locations around the U.S. including two years in Alaska. Artis enjoyed and lived life to the fullest. Among the many activities that he enjoyed were fishing, hunting, camping, gardening and talking on his Ham radio. After retirement, many happy miles were spent traveling around the United States with his wife, Gayle. In addition to God and country, Artis had no greater love in life than his family. He loved family gatherings and spending time them.
The family will receive friends on Sept. 21 at Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church in Crossville from 3-4 p.m. with a memorial service to follow at 4 p.m. Pastor Andrew Abraham will be officiating with internment at Shepherd of the Hills.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made to Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church, Caris Health Care or to a charity of your choice in memory of Artis.
