Arrived here with his young bride, Elizabeth Ann Vice Cox, from the Cox Manor, in Devonshire, to begin a new life together. They became prominent, respected citizens, having a family of nine children. Sadly, just 4 lived a long, active life. Richard and Elizabeth cared deeply for family, providing homes and financial support for at least two of his sisters, Keziah and Ann, who as a widow had 9 children of her own, and other family members. Richard was a successful merchant, land developer, entrepreneur. For a time, with his brother Samuel J., he joined the "49ers" gold rush to California. Richard's return to Dubuque in 1851 marked the true beginning of his successful business career, there. About 1868-'70 he purchased farmland in Hardin County, which was farmed by his son, John, and his family. This marked the move to North-central Iowa of this branch of the family.
