He was the son of Dwight Backus, Sr. and Lucille Jarrell Backus.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Rainelle where he was a deacon since 1975 and served as the Music Director for 55 years. He had also been a member of the Rainelle Lions Club. He was the Greenbrier County Magistrate for 16 years.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and a daughter, Amber Dawn Backus.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara Rice Backus; daughter, Terri Backus McGuire of Rainelle; son, Joseph “Joe” Backus and Cheryl of Rock, WV; brother, Dwight (Cindy) Backus of Rainelle; grandchild, Brandi Fox of Cranberry, PA; and three great grandchildren, Brittnei, Braden, and Presley.
A memorial service will be held 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 21, 2019 at the First Baptist Church of Rainelle. Officiating the service are Pastor Keith Cook, Rev. Dana Gatewood, Rev. Les Mullins, and Alan Schoolcraft Williams. Visitation is one hour prior to the service.
