Dorothy Wheat Nickerson, 78, former resident of Post Road in Wells, died March 11, 2002, at the Kennebunk Nursing Center where she had been a resident for nine years.
She was born July 7, 1923, in Kansas City, Mo., a daughter of Clarence and Kathleen (Brown) Atkeson. She graduated from Cedarvale, Kansas. schools and attended Huff Business College in Kansas.
She moved with her husband to Wells in 1951 where they owned and operated Nickerson’s 9B Ranch Greenhouses and she has served as secretary of the business since 1988. She was an active member of the Order of Eastern Star Priscilla Chapter of Wells serving as secretary for many years and also held various positions in the Grand Lodge. She was also a member of the Rebekah Lodge of Kennebunk. She was an avid bowler and was also very talented at various types of crafts and needlework.
She was predeceased by a daughter, Kathleen Ann Nickerson, who died in 1947.
She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Winthrop T. Nickerson of Wells and Phoenix, Ariz.; sons Bernard of Wells and Ronald of East Rochester NH; daughter Joyce Graves of Phoenix; brother William “Bud” Atkeson of Longmont, Colo.; and grandchildren, Rebecca, Randy, Michelle, and Marc Nickerson, and Christina and Aaron Graves.
A graveside service will be held in the spring in Ocean View Cemetery, Wells. Arrangements are by Bibber Memorial Chapel, Kennebunk.
