Murders, Suicide Rock Valley Town
Lindsay - This quiet Tulare County town was rocked Friday when a man accused of trying to drown his wife last October apparently shot and killed her, her father, her brother and a friend before turning the gun on himself.
Florene Cathey, 19, had fled to Oklahoma after refusing to testify against her husband, Chester, 24, after he reportedly tried to drown her in the Friant-Kern Canal Oct 26. She finally agreed to testify and returned a few days ago.
Dead are Cathey and his wife, her father, Gene Adney, about 53, her brother, Roger, 16, and a family friend, John Sanders. Also wounded in he bizarre shooting was Sander's wife, Pam, 25. who was found on the front lawn of the Adneys' 187 Bellah St home with a bullet in her spine, found by Lindsay police repsonding to reports of shots fired in the area. Police report they found the bodies of Sanders, Adney and his son sprawled in the dining room. Thinking the killer was still inside and fearing for the safety of the Cathey's 10 month old daughter, they called for reinforcements and sealed off the area.
Witnesses said Adney's son, Gary, 10, learned of the tragedy after coming home from school. [Comment about his response too horrible to type]
Police said the killer used two weapons, a shotgun and a handgun. all victims were shot in the head.
Authorities later brought in Cathey's brother, Donald, 35, for questioning after learning he drove his brother to the Adney home and then left, allegedly knowing his brother was armed.
Mrs Sanders was taken to Lindsay Hospital where she was stabilized and transferred to Kaeah-Delta hospital in Visalia. Hospital officials listed her in fair condition.
Tulare County District Attorney Jay Powell, standing at the scene of the murders while the bodies were being taken from the house, repeated that Cathey had been released from custody the day before.
"That's justice?" he asked.

The Fresno Bee 14 Dec 1977 excerpts:
The day before the killings there was a preliminary hearing in the Lindsay court for Chester Cathey, 25, of Lindsay. Cathey's hearing was based on charges he kidnapped and tried to kill his wife, Florene, last October.
However, after Cathey posted bail and the next afternoon he charged into the home of his father-in-law, Gene Adney, shot and killed him, Adney's son, Roger, a neighbor, John Sanders, 25, Cathey's own wife, and himself. He also seriously wounded Sander's wife, Pam, 25, who managed to flee the house before she collapsed on the front lawn.
