Vera Ashbaugh was born February 4, 1916, near Ayrshire, in Clay County, Iowa, to Harley Howard and Harriet Mae (Barber) Ashbaugh. She grew up on a farm in Sac County, Iowa and attended elementary school in Jackson Township and Sac City Elementary School. She was baptized and confirmed in the First Presbyterian Church in Sac City.

Vera graduated from the Sac City High School in 1932 and attended Grinnell College one year before teaching two years in a rural school in Sac County. She married Louis F. Cass, also a Sac City High School graduate, in 1935. They both taught school in a two-room schoolhouse in Pierce, Colorado after attending college in Greeley, Colorado. In 1941 a son, Douglas S. Cass was born. They then moved to Iowa City, Iowa to continue their educations. Vera graduated in 1948 in a dual program with a B.A. degree and a Medical degree from the College of Medicine at the University of Iowa, Iowa City, Iowa. Vera and Louis divorced in 1945.

Dr. Cass interned at Children's Hospital in San Francisco, California in 1948-49 and was Assistant Resident in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology there the following year. She then entered General Practice before spending a year as Assistant Resident in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Stanford Lane Hospital, Stanford University, San Francisco, California in 1955-56. Following her Residency, Dr. Cass was appointed Head Resident on the Stanford Services at the San Francisco County Hospital in 1956-57 and was then appointed Head Resident at Children's Hospital for Women and Children in San Francisco in 1957-58.

In 1953 Dr. Cass established a private practice in Obstetrics and Gynecology in Berkeley, California, from which she retired in 1975 at the age of 59. During this same time, 1972-73, she became Chief of Gynecology at Herrick Memorial Hospital in Berkeley. In 1963 she married Dr. Ralph Thompson. Following her retirement, she and her husband moved to Sea Ranch in Northern California where he died in 1977. She then moved to Orcas Island in the San Juan Islands off the coast of Washington state to be near her son. Her last move before entering Park View Care Center in May 2005 was to Paradise Park, McAllen, Texas, in 1984, to be near her sister Harriet. She married Bill Ashcraft in 1987. He passed away in 1997.

Besides devoting her life to her son and her successful career, Dr. Cass loved to travel and play the piano as well as sew and crochet for relaxation. In 2000 she received a special honor from her hometown by being elected into the Sac Community School Hall of Fame.
