Ray Murdoch Culver, 91, of Matagorda went across the river to be with the Lord on September 2, 2019. He was born April 1, 1928, in Matagorda to Arthur Stewart and Minnie Murdoch Culver.

Ray was a fourth generation Matagorda Culver born into a cattle ranching family where he worked throughout his school years. Upon graduation, he worked multiple jobs as a tug boat deckhand and rancher. On August 5, 1950, he married Laverne Fulton. Shortly after their wedding, he was drafted and served in the Korean Conflict in Okinawa, Japan, as a military policeman. Once discharged, he acquired a job at Texas Gulf Sulphur in New Gulf, Texas, and on weekends he and his family would travel to Matagorda to tend to the ranching business. After three years, he returned home to work at the Colorado River Locks as a lock-tender for the Corps of Engineers while also continuing his cattle work. He settled in Matagorda where he served on the Matagorda Elementary School Board in various positions. After retiring from the Locks, he devoted all of his time to his lifelong passion of cattle ranching. In 1991, he was awarded Outstanding Cattlemen of the Year by the Matagorda County Cattlemen’s Association. Ray enjoyed deer and hog hunting, spending time with his family and three granddaughters, making sausage with his friends, but most of all he loved spending time with LaVerne.

Ray and LaVerne raised their two children together in Matagorda and were blessed to watch as their children and three granddaughters pursued their passions and careers. Ray lost the love of his life, LaVerne, on July 5, 2017, only one month shy of their 67th wedding anniversary.

Ray is preceded in death by his parents Arthur Stewart Culver and Minnie Murdoch Culver, wife LaVerne Fulton Culver, and brother Arthur Stewart Culver, Jr. He is survived by his children; daughter Sherry Culver Sprott, son-in-law L.R. Sprott; son Ray Culver, Jr., daughter-in-law Julie Allen Culver; granddaughters Haley Sprott Cantu and husband Nicholas Cantu, Hannah Sprott, Cassie Culver, and great grandson Matthew Cantu.

The family will receive friends and relatives 5:00pm-7:00pm Friday, September 13, at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home. Services are 10:00am Saturday, September 14, 2019, at Matagorda United Methodist Church with Rev. Maggie Young officiating. Interment will follow at Matagorda Cemetery. Honorary pallbearers are Walter Ritz, David Allen, George Deshotels, Mike Daugherty, Jeff Davis, and James “Bubba” Wilburn.

In lieu of flowers, the family wishes for donations to be made to Matagorda United Methodist Church Post Office Box 113, Matagorda, Texas 77457 or Bay Villa Nursing Home, 1800 13th Street, Bay City, Texas 77414 or IPH Home Health & Hospice, 190 Abner Jackson Parkway, Lake Jackson, Texas 77566
