Thurza was born to Charles and Selina Trevithick Thomas in Cornwall. She was one of eight children, but only she and her brother were born in Cornwall. Many mining families left Cornwall for other parts of England and even the world. The other children were born in Burnley, Lancaster where Thurza grew up.

She and Albert were married in Jun 1899. They had the one son, Harry.
