She was the daughter of David George Brownlow Cecil, 6th Marquess of Exeter and Lady Mary Theresa Montagu Douglas Scott. As Lord Burghley, her father was a gold medallist in the 400m hurdles at the 1928 Amsterdam Olympics.
She married Harry John Neville Vane, the future 11th Baron Barnard of Barnard's Castle, son of Christopher William Vane, 10th Baron Barnard of Barnard's Castle and Sylvia Mary Straker, on 8th October 1952. Her married name became Vane. She was styled as Baroness Barnard of Barnard's Castle on 19 October 1964.
She and Harry John Neville Vane, 11th Baron Barnard of Barnard's Castle were divorced in 1992. Lady Barnard then moved to Barningham where she lived for the rest of her life.
She was appointed Dame of Grace, Most Venerable Order of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem (D.St.J.)
Lady Barnard died peacefully at home in Barningham on 6th September 2018, having lived with Alzheimer's for many years.
A funeral service took place on Friday, 21st September, at St Michael and All Angels Church in Barningham, followed by internment in the churchyard extension.
