Vernon Lee Cummins

Vernon Lee Cummins, 86, passed away on Thursday, August 22, 2019, at his home in Berea.
Born in Mt. Vernon on October 6, 1932, the son of Joe and Nancy Sowder Cummins, he left school in the 6th grade and spent his teen years selling popcorn at the Renfro Valley Barn Dance. He spent time as a cook at the local Bellyachers restaurant eventually relocating to Berea to become a car salesman. He co-owned, owned and operated several dealerships to include Baker & Cummins and Cummins & Foley in Berea and Vernon Cummins Auto in Richmond. He was also the Used Car Manager at Joe Conrad Chevrolet in Lexington. Mr. Cummins was a retired restaurateur, he owned and operated several restaurants including the Colonel and Carlton of Berea, KFC in Jackson, and Lee's Famous Recipe in Richmond, Berea and Manchester. After many accomplishments he decided to finish his education and successfully obtained his GED at the age of 65.
Mr. Cummins not only took pride in all his business ventures, but truly relished the friends he made during his time in business. He had a big heart and enjoyed helping others.
He had a passion for animals especially dogs and horses. He raised Jack Russell Terriers and trained many award-winning Tennessee Walking horses. In 1986 he received the Kentucky Horse of the Year award.
Mr. Cummins was a member and deacon of the Westside Baptist Church in Berea where he spent time serving others through many ministries.
He is survived by his cherished and devoted wife of 68 years, Faye Cummins, three daughters, Beverly Harkleroad, Belinda (Steve) Riddle, of Berea and Tina (Tom) Fritz, of Richmond. Three brothers, Ivan Cummins, Bentley Cummins, and Glen (Josephine) Cummins, and a sister, Vivian Cummins. Also surviving are grandchildren, Bunky Harkleroad, Angela Prewitt, Larinda Agee, Chase Riddle, Tatton Jacob and Taryn Lockhart, several great grandchildren, a great great grandson, and many nieces and nephews.
Other than his parents, Mr. Cummins was preceded in death by, his two brothers, Kenneth and Earl Cummins, and his sister, Jean Anderson.
Funeral Services for Mr. Vernon Cummins will be 2:00 PM Saturday, August 24, 2019, at Westside Baptist Church with Bro. Allen Livingood officiating. Entombment will follow in the Berea Cemetery Mausoleum. Visitation will be 11:00 AM until the service at the church.
