After the War his mother, Sarah, remarried and moved with other family members to Hill County, Texas. Hardin and his elder brother, William, decided on a different route. They moved to Lamar County, Texas where their cousin, Lemuel Hardin Williams resided.
Hardin's great-great-great-grandparents are John Lewis of Ireland and his wife, Margaret Lynn, who settled in the Shenandoah Valley about 1732. Their daughter, Margaret L. Lewis, who married William Long is Hardin's great-great-grandmother.
