Newburyport, MA — Carol Johnson Sweet Abbott, 84, passed away peacefully on Thursday, June 27, at Kindred Brigham Manor Nursing Home in Newburyport. She was the wife of William C. Abbott of Newburyport and the former wife of the late James N. "Jake" Sweet, Jr. of Ithaca, N.Y. Born in Endicott, N.Y., Carol was the daughter of the late Dorothy Marshall Johnson Barres and Harry L. Johnson, Jr., a descendent of the Endicott-Johnson Shoe Company.
Carol graduated from Vassar College and received her Masters in Human Services at the age of 50 from Lesley College. While raising her five children, Carol worked in social services and was a tireless crusader for civil rights. She marched with Martin Luther King in Boston in the 1960s and stood up for women's rights by attending multiple marches in Washington, D.C., in the eighties. She co-founded the Women's Crisis Center in Newburyport in 1981, which has since been renamed the Jeanne Geiger Crisis Center. Carol received an Outstanding Service Award by the Massachusetts Coalition of Battered Women Service Groups as well as a State Senate Citation for her work with battered women.
Despite her many accomplishments and service to her community, Carol received the greatest joy from her children and grandchildren, who will miss her dearly. She is survived by her daughter, Melissa Carol Sweet; her sons, Crandall D. McLean and wife, Janice, Brooks Sweet and wife, Ginny, Christopher L.
