John Edwin Curtis of Lubbock passed away on Sunday, July 1, 2007, at the age of 80.

He was born on Jan. 17, 1927, in Windom, to Dan and Nodie Mae Curtis. Mr. Curtis graduated from Dimmitt High School in 1944. He was a WWII Veteran serving in the US Army. He later served in the US Air Force. Mr. Curtis married Bobbie Murphree on Nov. 10, 1951, at Reese Air Force Base. After leaving the military he was co-owner and manager of McCarty-Curtis Cigar Company. In 1968, he and his wife established Smoker's Haven, Inc. Mr. Curtis had a passion for gardening and a love of cigars.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, and five sisters.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife; a daughter, Karen Meiers and husband Jim of Lubbock; sons, Carl Curtis and wife Jill of Tucson, Ariz., Larry Curtis and wife Rosemary of San Marcos, Calif., and John Curtis and wife Jennifer of Lubbock; eight grandchildren and one great granddaughter.

A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, July 3, 2007, at Resthaven Memorial Park. A celebration of life service will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, July 3, 2007, at Bacon Heights Baptist Church, with Dr. Jerry Joplin officiating.
