Joe Chalton Bates, age 86, of Jasper County, passed away Tuesday, August 13, 2019, at Piedmont Newton Medical Center in Covington.

Chalton Bates was born in Covington, Ga. on May 6, 1933, to the late J. C. Bates and Annie Laura Jordan Bates. Joe Chalton Bates was a lifelong resident of Jasper County.

He was raised by his grandparents, Lawrence and Ocie Jordan after the death of his mother at two years of age.

One of his greatest accomplishments was his marriage to the love of his life (Lois Carolyn Jones) for 60 years before the Lord called her home in 2015. He was employed by Sears and Roebuck in Macon, for over 41 years. He was a deacon for well over 40 years at New Rocky Creek Baptist Church and they were the first couple on record to be married in the church.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was also preceded in death by his son, Anthony Craig Bates; and half-brother, Wallace Bates.

He loved his family, his church, his friends and most of all he loved his Lord Jesus Christ!

He is survived by his daughters, Marsha (Eddie) Smith of Jasper County and Sue Ellen (Mark) Miller of Hennessey, Okla.; daughter-in-law, Lee Ann Bates of Macon; grandchildren, Ryan (Summer) Bates, Maria Ruckel, Chris Daniel, Cassie Daniel, Austin (Staci) Miller and Ethan Miller; great- grandchildren, Luke Ruckel, Jr., Evan Ruckel, Layna Daniel, Ayden Bates, Lane Daniel, Ryan Miller, Taytim Bates and Levi Smith; and half-brother, Jody (Margaret) Bates of Covington.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, August 17, 2019, at New Rocky Creek Baptist Church in Mansfield. Interment will be held in the church cemetery. Dr. Randal Reese will officiate.

Serving as pallbearers will be Luke Ruckel, Jr., Evan Ruckel, Chris Daniel, Ryan Bates, Austin Miller and Ethan Miller. Honorary pallbearers will be the Methuselah Sunday School Class.

The family will receive friends from 1 until 2 p.m., Saturday, August 17, 2019, at New Rocky Creek Baptist Church prior to the service.
