Known to all as "Pete," Brown worked on the family farm until he was drafted into the United States Army. A casualty of WWII, Pete served in the 740th “Daredevil”Tank Batallion, a division of the Eighth Infantry Division.
The 740th Tank Battalion was formed in 1943 from draftees primarily from the States of Texas and Oklahoma. After completing basic training, these men were also trained in a classified program to use tanks equipped with search lights to blind the enemy on the battlefield.
Due to this training, the 740th did not go overseas until October 1944 (after the D-Day landings). Once there, the “Daredevil” Tankers fought the Battle of Germany virtually non-stop supporting the 82nd Airborne Division, 8th Infantry and the 13th Infantry.
On Friday, April 13, 1945, as his platoon advanced on Vorde, Germany, in support of the 13th Infantry, Corporal Brown’s tank was hit by an enemy tank and he and two other crew members were killed in action. He was 23 years, 8 months old.
Brown was preceded in death by two infant siblings Delton and Pauline Brown.
Corporal Brown is survived by his parents William Harley Brown, and Carrie Virginia Huddle Brown of Brownfield, Texas, three brothers, Malcolm Brown of Dallas, Texas, Bill Brown and W. H. Brown, Jr. Of Brownfield, Texas and three sisters, Mrs. Berlin (Irene) Brisco of Brownfield, Texas; Mrs. Glen Mason of Meadow, Texas; and Mrs. Willie Hyman of Brownfield, Texas.
