Gertrude was born to Thomas and Elizabeth (Connelly) McDermott, Irish immigrants from County Galway. Her father left the family when Gertrude was only eight years old, and her mother, Elizabeth, took on domestic work while Gertrude and her siblings looked after each other. Her mother later worked for Jennie C. Benedict's on Fourth St. At a young age Gertrude began working in the woolen mills in Louisville. After her mother's death she resided with relatives or in boarding houses near the mills. Her marriage to George Thompson took place on 4 September 1912 in Louisville at St. Paul's Catholic Church. She was 32 years old. Gertrude was the devoted mother to four daughters, Loretto, Lillian, Geneva, and Leona. Only Lillian did not live to adulthood. She was scalded to death when a laundry tub turned over on her when she was only about 17 months old.

Gravesite Details
The birth year of 1877 for Gertrude is in error. It should read 1880. The stone is in poor condition.
