Marion Davis Connor Woodruff 11/24/14 - 4/9/07
Marion Woodruff, 92, of Charlotte died Easter Monday. She was born in Greenville, SC, daughter of the late Wofford Fletcher Davis and Lillian Thacker Osteen Davis. She was predeceased by husbands Wilton M. Connor, Sr. and Harvey L. Woodruff.
She was a 1935 graduate of Coker College in Hartsville, SC with a BA in English, where she was active in all aspects of college life. She did graduate work at Furman University and Vassar College. She was a member of Myers Park Baptist Church and served as research assistant for Dr. George Heaton. In addition to her Church work, she served on the board of the Family and Children's Service Bureau and the Charlotte Music Club. Besides her work as a realtor, her great love of books and writing led her to a career as book reviewer - reviewing books for private clubs and for Family Life Publications of Duke University. In 1967 she served as judge for the annual literary competition for the N.C. Literary and Historical Association. She also worked in Charlotte's local libraries. She took great delight in writing a collection of short stories - representing her first-hand experiences and observations of local happenings, titled 'The Scam', 'Stanleyville', 'A Sewing Club Disaster', 'The Charlotte Choral Society' and others. As a short story author, book reviewer, realtor, librarian, pianist and Indulgent Mother to five children, she will be missed. As a passionate and insatiable reader of non-fiction and biographies she was famous among her family and friends as immensely intelligent with a sharp wit and clever sense of humor. Her enjoyment of books, houses, playing the piano, instant coffee and white bread were legendary.
As she said, 'I buried two good husbands and most of my doctors.' Mrs. Woodruff was preceded in death by her brother, Wofford F. Davis, Jr.; and sister, Martha Davis Boyter McCarroll. She leaves behind daughter, Lynn Connor Buchan; son-in-law, Fred Buchan; son, Wilton Connor; daughter-in-law, Catherine McDermott Connor; daughter, Charlotte Woodruff; daughter, Debbie Birdsong; son-in-law, Bill Birdsong; daughter, Ann Woodruff Newton; son-in-law, Randy Newton; and six grandchildren, Marion, Elizabeth and McDermott (Mac) Connor, David and Hannah Birdsong and Chandler Newton. Mrs. Woodruff's family is grateful for the care provided by her sitters, especially Mrs. Barbara Wallace.
Plans for the private memorial service and interment are incomplete. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the annual scholarship fund of Coker College, Development Office, 300 E College Ave., Hartsville SC 29550. 'Small is my world and narrow wherein the corner I dwell,' W. Somerset Maugham. Carolina Funeral Service & Cremation Center is entrusted with the arrangements.
