He went to California on horseback in 1855 to take a job as an engineer with the city of San Francisco. During his life he was involved with many infrastructure projects in California including building roads, railroads and water. He married in Ione, California in 1868 Lucy Ann Hall and had 12 children with her, 10 surviving to adulthood. He and his family lived all over the various gold country towns and in San Francisco. He went to Australia twice for work in the 1870s and 1880s. He died while living with his eldest son Hartley in Bristol and is memorialized at the Mountain View Cemetery in Oakland, California where his wife and many of his children are buried.
