Grandma

Mildred M. Bisig (Hanson, Merritt)

Mildred and her twin sister Marion, the Fife Hanson twins, were born in Tacoma, WA to Otto and Signe Hanson.

Preceded in death by her parents, Otto and Signe Hanson, brother Ivar Hanson, sister Thelma Hopkins, first husband Paul (Bud) Merritt and second husband Fred Bisig.

Mildred graduated from Fife High School in 1940. Following high school, she attended beauty school and used her basement as her "salon" for friends and family for many years.

She lived her entire life in Fife except for three years during WWII that were spent on Catalina Island, a short period in 1958 back on Catalina Island, and recently four months as a resident at the Mill Ridge Village Assisted Living Facility in Milton.

In 1960, shortly after her first husband died, Mildred began working as the Fife Elementary School administrative secretary for Principal Phil Norby and later Jerry Langford, where she enjoyed working with kids and colleagues for over 25 years.

In 1963 she married high school classmate, Fred Bisig and began her passion for golf. She and Fred were golfing members at Fircrest Golf Club until two years ago, when health dictated they "retire" from golf.

She always had a passion for sports and supported Jim and Tom in many activities, studying the rule books to understand the games. She always attended sports and activities of her two boys, spouse, and grandkids. She rarely missed an event, and often drove the boys' classmates to away games.

In 1962, a year after losing her first husband, her mother, and her father, Mildred was diagnosed with cancer. Fearful that she would leave her two sons orphaned, she fought cancer for 44 years, never complaining. Many people were not aware of her battle with cancer for over half her life.

Mildred enjoyed many vacation trips to California to visit longtime friends from Catalina days and back to the east coast to visit her sister-in-law Madelyn and cousin Helga.

She was a charter member of Fife Presbyterian Church until it was relocated, then attended First Presbyterian Church in Tacoma until she could not drive any more.

Mildred was known by family and friends as a special, caring person. She always had a smile on her face, never complained, and was active supporter of the Fife community. Over the last few years her passion became the newly formed Fife Historical Society, gathering information and artifacts from friends and family for the museum. She never got to see the museum open in the former house of her twin sister Marion Dacca and her family.
