Robert was the son of June Green and step-son of Norwood Green of Bridgeport Washington; he was the son of Lester Hayden of Phoenix Arizona, and dear brother of Tom and Richard Hayden. Robert entered service (Selected Service) in the U.S Army and upon completion of training was ordered for duty in Vietnam. Arriving incounty on February 9, 1968 he was assigned to and served with A Company, 1st Battalion, 6th Infantry, 198th Infantry Brigade, Americal Division, USARV.

On May 24 during OPERATION WHEELER/WALLOWA in Quang Tin Province, A Company engaged an enemy force 9 kilometers northwest of Tien Phuoc. During the fire fight 4 men were killed in action, one of the casualties was Cpl Hayden as a result of enemy rifle fire.
