Janice was born on March 24, 1939, in a coal mine hospital in Rock Springs, Wyoming, to Arthur Otis and Frances Marie Davis. When Jan was two years old, her family, which now included baby sister, Marilynn, moved to Gig Harbor, Washington. Here she grew up and the family welcomed seven more siblings. As the oldest of eight children (one sister died as an infant), she had to quit high school in her junior year to care for her ailing mother and take care of the younger children. She always regretted not graduating from high school and swore that her children would all graduate and, through her dedication and hard work, they all did.

At age 20, she met Ronald Clinton Herigstad and they were married on October 11, 1959 in Great Falls Montana. She lost her first baby in 1961 but in 1962 her son Alf was born followed by Ladonna in 1964 and Barton in 1965. By 1965 the family had moved back to Washington State and lived in the Longview/Kelso area until 1969 when they bought the 10 acres in Olympia that she called home for the rest of her life.

Jan loved her family and put them first in everything that she did. She was proud to be a homemaker and only worked outside of the home for a short time in the 1970s at Bailey's Drug Store in Tumwater. Her humor and love was always present and comforting to her family. Later when her grandchildren came along, they were her joy and she loved them deeply. This love just grew exponentially when the great grandchildren came along. She was never short of love to give to anyone she ever met.

She was an athlete at heart. As a young girl, she ran everywhere and could do a triple cartwheel into her 50s and was practically unmatched at horseshoes. Her sport of choice was baseball. She would recount how sad she was when she started high school in the 1950s and girls at her school were no longer allowed to play baseball with the boys. If she would have been born in a different time, she would have been a star in any sport that she may have chosen. Instead, she was content playing catch with her children and watching the Mariners. Family events and outings had to be scheduled around whether the Mariners were televised or not. She never had the desire to go see a game in person though. She always said she had a much better view watching on her television instead of at Safeco Field! She also loved to bowl and, for many years, she was on several bowling leagues; her highest game bowled was 226. She enjoyed both the game and the friendships that she made through this sport.

Jan was the easiest person to talk to. Her kitchen table was often filled with friends who came over just to chat while the kids were in school. Her children and grandchildren and their friends also found her easy to talk to and often stayed up into the late hours of the night just talking, whether it was about their problems, big foot, stories from her childhood or any other subject. Jan, like her own mother when Jan was a child, always sat at the kitchen table, never in the living room. It was where she was most comfortable and she was always there for anyone who needed her.

Jan passed away at home the evening of February 13, 2013, after a long illness. She is survived by her husband of 53 plus years, Ronald; two sons, Alf and Barton; and one daughter, Ladonna, all of Olympia; four grandchildren, Christine (Terry) Riley of Rochester WA, Clinton (Lyndsay) Herigstad of Michigan, Gurine (Dusty) Dodge of Lacey, and Reier Herigstad of Olympia; three siblings, brother, George Davis of Allyn WA, and sisters, Patricia (Ed) Barnett of Bonney Lake, and Karen (Thurman) Whiteley of Port Orchard . She also had seven great grandchildren, Maria, Patrick, Sheena, Andrew, Freya, Solveig and Mira, and was expecting another great granddaughter in May. She also had many nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews whom she loved dearly. She was preceded in death by both of her parents and her siblings, Kathy Davis, Larry Davis, Diane Davis, Marilynn Buckner and Arthur (Mike) Davis.
